Eureka, SD-Funeral service for Reuben J. Burkle, 86, of Eureka will be 10:00 am, Friday, October 11, 2013 at Carlsen Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Ron Vetch will officiate.

Burial will be in Eureka City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3-6 pm at the funeral home.

Reuben died Friday, October 4, 2013 at Ashley Nursing Home, Ashley, ND.

Reuben John Burkle, son of Andrew A. and Katherine (Beuchler) Burkle was born September 4, 1927 at Sawyer, ND. This is where he grew up while attending country school at Sunnyside #5 in Willis Township. He worked on the family farm. When he was 14 he began working in Minot, ND at a garage and car storage business. In the mid 1950’s, Reuben began working for Swift Meats as a truck driver and in the warehouse. From 1960-1965, he began working at Dakota Made Flour and also part-time at Gambles Store until those companies closed. He then moved to Berthold, ND where he worked for Neshem Custom Harvesters as a combine operator.

He was united in marriage to Violet Bertsch Rohrbach on December 5, 1970 at Eureka. In 1972 they moved to Aberdeen where he worked for a steel building erection crew. In October of 1976 they purchased the Eureka Drive-Inn and moved to Eureka, selling the Drive-Inn in 1979. Violet died October 6, 2002. Reuben has kept busy over the years tilling gardens and doing yard work for many families in Eureka.

Reuben loved playing cards with family and friends; canasta was a favorite of his. He liked to visit with people and with that being said, “He never met a stranger”.

Reuben is survived by one daughter, Cathy (Dennis) McBeian of Menasha, WI; one son, Stacy (Laura Glinz) Burkle of Minot, ND; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one step-son, Raymond (Adina) Rohrbach of Eureka; one step-daughter, Gloria Stevens of Sioux Falls and seven step-grandchildren and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, seven brothers and sisters and one step-daughter.

Casketbearers will be Dean Schumacher, Arnie Fauth, Robert Loebs, Johnny Schwingler, Keith Zimmerman and Lester Merkel.

The organist will be Marsha Vetch and special music by Rev. Ron and Marsha Vetch.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
