Alverda May (Bagola) Zephier, 88, passed into the Spirit World with her loving family by her side Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, in Aberdeen, SD.
Alverda (Woman Who Stands to Be Looked Upon) was born May 16, 1933, in Dupree, SD. She is a proud Mnincoju Lakota and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, as were her parents Whitley Bagola and Mary Mollie (Scar Leg) Bagola.
Alverda is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Harley Dean Zephier, Sr., of Aberdeen, SD. She is also survived by children: Linda Montana of Minneapolis, MN; Loren Whitley Zephier of Eagle Butte, SD; Harley Zephier, Jr. of Thunder Butte, SD; Whitley Zephier of Phoenix, AZ; Robin (Patti) Zephier of Rapid City, SD; Darin Zephier of Austin, TX; and Lanni Zephier Smith (Lance) of Aberdeen, SD; her Bagola nephews and nieces: Myron, Marian, Loren, Raylene and Renee; her grandchildren: Jared (Stephany) Zephier; Derek (Britnie) Zephier; Dannielle Zephier; Charlie Bercier; Mercury Zephier Smith; Ian Montana; and Molly Montana; her great grandchildren: Reese, Taya and Sage Zephier; Chance, Brynn, Myles and Dawson Zephier; Madison Arendt; Mia McGrane; Gabriel Bercier; Colt and Sophie Montana; and Bentley Zephier; and numerous relatives.
Alverda was preceded in death by her parents Whitley and Mary (Scar Leg) Bagola of Dupree/Thunder Butte, SD; grandparents First Woman and Mato Niyanpi/Joseph Scar Leg; and George and Laura (Face) Bagola; siblings Llewellyn Bagola; Sam Eaglestaff; and Estherlene Low Dog; nephews Bryon and Llewellyn Jr. Bagola; and granddaughter Sage Montana.
To honor her wishes, a private memorial and cremation rites were held Nov. 3. In lieu of flowers, you may plant a tree to honor Alverda’s memory and give back to Mother Earth (Unci Maka).
