Bernice died January 5, 2022, at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.

Bernice Allegra Hoff was born August 29, 1932, to Jacob M. and Martha (Strobel) Hoff east of Eureka. She attended country school and later attended Northern State Teacher’s College graduating with a Associates of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she began teaching at rural schools from 1950 to 1956. Bernice was united in marriage to Henry Oster, Jr. on June 19, 1955, at the Eureka Reformed Church. They made their home on his family farm west of Eureka. Together they expanded the farm business into a cow/calf and feedlot operation. Bernice played an important role in their farm operation, helping with a multitude of fieldwork tasks, livestock chores and bookkeeping. She did this while managing their household and raising their three children. Bernice always raised a spectacular garden, grew many flowers, and kept the farmyard pristine.

In addition to her roles on the farm and raising their family, Bernice was an active member of the community. She attended Zion American Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School, served on the Eureka Hospital Board and was a member of the Eureka Garden Club and local Extension Club. Bernice enjoyed cooking, baking, crafting, and traveling with Henry. Her favorite role was mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was very proud of her family.

Bernice is survived by her children, Steve (Debra) Oster of Eureka, Patricia (Gary) Baule of Andover, SD and Paul (Brenda) Oster of Waterford, WI; nine grandchildren, Michael Baule, Megan Baule, Rebecca (Aaron) Oster Bach, Diana Oster, Robyn Oster, Nickolas Oster, Melissa Oster, Samuel Oster, and Makenna Oster; four great-granddaughters and one great-grandson, Camila, Jasmine and Hazel Baule-Toledo and Eloise and August Bach.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Richard Hoff and Raymond Hoff and sister, Gertrude Kimm.

Casketbearers will be Bernice’s Grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Zion American Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
