Chester Edward Hughey Jr., 81, of Wallace, SD. passed away on Thursday, October 13th, 2022 at his home in Wallace, surrounded by family.  Chester’s wishes were to be cremated with no formal services.

Chester Edward Hughey Jr. was born May 4th, 1941, son of Chester Hughey Sr., and Eunice Cora (Stokes) Hughey-Pettit.  He grew up on Mackinac Island, MI., and caddied at the Wawashkamo Golf Course.  The family moved to East Jordan for the children to finish their education. 

Chester went on to serve in the United States Army from 1958 to 1964.  Upon returning home, he was a U.S. Merchant Marine, sailing for Penn-Dixie and Manske on the Great Lakes.  He left sailing to pursue a career in Waste Water Management.  He completed his schooling at Northern in Marquette, MI. and went on to work at Kincheloe Air Force Base in the Waste Water treatment plant.  He loved telling jokes, playing cards, inventing board games, wood painting, and rock collecting.  He was an avid hunter throughout his life, and enjoyed fishing in later years.

Chester is survived by his four daughters; Dawn Rydberg of Rosemount, MN., Leyla Hughey-DeVoll of Gladstone, MI., Kiely Hughey of Rapid River, MI., and Aliesha Sonstebo and son-in-law Michael of Wallace, SD.  11 grandchildren, 1 foster great-granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter to be born in February.  He is also survived by five siblings.  Lorraine Kingma of Charlevoix, MI., Wyoma (Honey) Vandecaveye of Gwinn, MI., Sharon Whelan of Canyon Lake, CA., Bonnie Holck of Conway, MI., and Dawn Berryman of Tucson, AZ.  In addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends that are considered family. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Sr. and Eunice, his step-mother Bertha, seven brothers and two sisters.   

He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.  He always said “miss me, but let me go.”  We Love you always and will see you and your beautiful blue eyes again one day.
