Daniel Kaup was born February 23, 1939, to George and Dorothy (Hinricks) Kaup in Hoven, SD. Dan was the second eldest of seven children. He grew up on the family farm outside of Hoven and graduated from Hoven High School in 1957. After high school, Dan joined the National Guard and Army Reserves.
Dan met Constance “Connie” Beckler at Joe’s Bar in Onaka, SD. During their courting, they shared many dates together sitting in the back booth at the bar. Dan and Connie were married on April 27, 1960, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Onaka, SD. From this union came four children: Gary, Corrine, Delbert and Deanne. Dan and Connie purchased a farm outside Tolstoy, SD, where they made their home and raised their children for a few years until they sold the farm and moved to Aberdeen in 1970.
Dan’s occupation after farming was truck driving. He worked for Northern Wholesale and Hogg’s Restaurant Service, and he was very proud to do this work. Dan retired from truck driving in 1999 after nearly 30 years of service.
Dan’s children have many fond memories of Saturday mornings, waking up to the inviting smell of their dad making them breakfast almost every weekend. On weekday mornings, Dan would stand at the top of the stairs and holler down to the boys to get them out of bed for school. If Dan had to go to work early, Corrine would try to do the same, but her efforts certainly were not as effective as Dad's.
In his free time, Dan loved fishing. He would catch bullheads and fry them up for supper. His favorite spots were the Missouri River, Richmond Lake, and Waubay Lake. Dan also collected radios and boom boxes and had over 200 cassette tapes. Walking up to the garage, you would hear several radios with all different stations playing at the same time. If the radio wasn’t on in the garage, Dan would have the old country music channel playing in the house. He also loved tinkering around in the garage, taking apart pallets and putting them back together to load up in his old pickup truck.
Dan spent the last few years at Aberdeen Health and Rehabilitation, where he resided until his passing.
Daniel will be dearly missed by his wife of 63 years, Connie, of Aberdeen; daughters Corrine (John) Wald of Wyoming, MN, and Deanne (Paul) Olson of Forbes, ND; son, Delbert Kaup of Aberdeen; sisters: Donna Giuliani of Minneapolis, MN, Janice Mangleson of Rapid City, SD, and Susie Wingen of California; brother, Duane Kaup of Minneapolis, MN; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
