Eleanor Gross Obituary

Eleanor Gross, 97, of Bowdle, SD, went home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Bowdle Healthcare Center.

A private family Graveside Committal was held Friday, September 8 at the Bowdle City Cemetery with Pastor David Warner of Selby officiating.

Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1708 Eighth Avenue NE, Aberdeen, handled the arrangements.  Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at aberdeenfuneralhome.com.

Eleanor Opp was born on January 11, 1926, to John and Margaret (Luitele) Opp in Minot, North Dakota.

On August 18, 1946, Eleanor married Victor Gross in a double wedding ceremony. The couple was blessed to be married for sixty-eight years.  She loved being a pastor’s wife.  She was always a prayer warrior for her family and always could be found reading her Bible every morning.

Eleanor’s greatest joy was spending time with her husband and family.  Every Sunday she could be found preparing dinner at home for her family.  She loved having her family together.  Eleanor was a wonderful cook and baker and was famous for her chocolate cake and peanut butter balls.  She took great pride in making her grandchildren’s birthday cakes. She enjoyed her early morning reading and loved to wear hats to church.

Eleanor also enjoyed quilting for her family.  To this day, many still sleep under the quilts that she made, which will be treasured forever.  She also loved to sew dresses for her granddaughters.  They love to wear the dresses and twirl in them.

Eleanor was the grandma that every child dreamed of.  They loved to help grandma bake and make chokecherry and rhubarb jelly.  She tirelessly served those she loved and will forever be remembered for that.

Grateful for having shared Eleanor’s life are one son John Gross of Wisconsin; one daughter Nancy Gross of Warner, SD; eight grandchildren: Jeremy (Meliss) Mead, Melissa (Ray) VanSeveren, Amanda (Jesse) Frost, Carrington Mead, Colton (Kristen) Mead, Brayden (Cassidy) Gross, Shanya Gross, Samantha Gross; fourteen great-grandchildren: Eli, Emma, Emersen, Marshall, Maci, Spencer, Riley, Oliver, Noah, Ranger, Sebastian, Clinton, Gracie, and Jaxson; one brother Leo Buechler, four sisters: Wilma Wolf, Ella Stot, Linda Toller, and DeAnne Weber.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Victor; her mother and father; her brother Johnny 8, her son Paul Gross; three brothers: Ervin, Harvey, and Calvin; and one great-grandson Caleb Victor Mead.

Until we meet again…. Eleanor.
