Peter “Pete” Paul Weig was born on August 11, 1939, to Bernerd and Margaret (Schaeffer) Weig, in Nebraska. The family later moved to Aberdeen, SD, where Pete attended school and graduated from Central High School.
After graduation, Pete enlisted in the United States Navy and after serving for a few years, he was honorably discharged. Pete returned home to Aberdeen and married Sharon Smith. To this union, three beautiful daughters were born: Monica, Mary Jo, and Melanie. Eventually, the couple parted ways. Pete attended Northern State University in Aberdeen and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education.
Pete worked at Monroe High School and when Holgate Middle School opened, he made the switch to middle school math and taught there for 30+ years until he finally retired in 1995. Towards the end of his career at Holgate Middle School, he met Kathy Griffin and they became great friends.
Following retirement, Pete and Kathy enjoyed spending time together at their lake house on Pickerel Lake in Grenville, SD and spent many Halloweens at costume parties. In his spare time, Pete also enjoyed hunting deer, pheasant, and duck, and fishing, especially at Lake Pickerel. He also enjoyed playing poker with friends and game nights at the Elks Lodge, where he was a long-time member. A gamer at heart, you could almost always find Pete playing Legends of Zelda. He also dedicated much of his time to refereeing football, basketball, and volleyball for various schools in the area.
Pete is survived by his daughters: Monica (Peter) Kemp of Pardeeville, WI, Mary Jo (Jon) Button of Brandon, SD, and Melanie Adcock of Rapid City, SD; significant other of 34 years, Kathy Griffin of Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren: Cody Worrell, Courtney Worrell, Amanda Jo Button, Margaret Button, Andrew (Jami) Button, Emily Adcock, Bridget Adcock, and Ethan Adcock; one great-grandchild, Jaxon Jon Button; and many cousins and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Yvonne and John; and one granddaughter, Taylor Mae Button.
