Agnes E. Merkel

Ashley, ND-Private Graveside service for Agnes Emma Merkel, 90, of Ashley will be 2:00 pm, Friday, May 15, 2020 at Ashley City Cemetery. Pastor Barbara Krumm will officiate. The service will be live streamed on Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page and available at www.carlsenfh.com under Agnes's obituary.
Agnes died Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Ashley Nursing Home.
Agnes Emma was born January 24, 1930 to Christian "Christ" and Emma (Kusler) Fischer on the family farm southeast of Greenway, SD. She attended Wolff Country School through the eighth grade.
Agnes was united in marriage to Milton Merkel on July 17, 1949 in Eureka Reformed Church. On July 25, 1949 they moved to a farm northwest of Ashley, where they lived until their retirement in 1994. They then moved into Ashley where she has since resided.
She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and served on numerous church committees. Agnes enjoyed farm life and her garden.
Grateful for having shared Agnes's life are her children, Patricia Leland and Dwight Merkel, both of Ashley; granddaughter, Kristie (Jason) Leshovsky of Moorhead, MN; sisters-in-law, Lela Fischer of Eureka, SD and Arline Fischer of Bismarck, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton (10-24-2012); sisters, Irene Rohrbach, Florence Westberg, Ella Opp, Clara Nies, Arlene Dohn, and Martha Dohn; and brothers, Art, Helmuth, and August.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
