Alvina died August 22. 2020, at Ashley Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility.
Alvina Nitschke was born October 19, 1925, the oldest of six children, to Gottfried J. and Dora (Schock) Nitschke on a farm south of Fredonia ND. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church. Alvina attended a nearby country school for eight years. Being the oldest child, she was required to work on the family farm instead of enrolling in high school. Alvina was united in marriage to Harold Schlenker on June 15, 1947, at Zion II Lutheran Church. They farmed near Kulm ND, welcomed three children and moved to Ashley ND in the fall of 1962. In 1970 they built a new home. Over the years, Alvina worked at the local bakery, Ashley Clinic and helped operate the Ashley Laundromat with Harold. She was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, participated in women's circles and served on the shepherd staff. Alvina enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining. She was involved for many years in the Sunshine Homemaker's Club and local bowling leagues. In retirement, some of Harold and Alvina's happiest times were spent in McAllen TX where they formed many new friendships over thirteen winters. Harold and Alvina were married for 66 years. Harold passed away February 22, 2014, and Alvina spent her last 4 ½ years as a resident of AMC Skilled Nursing Facility in Ashley ND.
Alvina is survived by one daughter: Janet Howard of Brooklyn Park MN; two sons: Tim (Kim) Schlenker of Grand Forks ND, and Terry Schlenker of Wheat Ridge CO; three grandchildren: Matthew (Michelle) Schlenker of San Jose CA, Erin (Aaron) Koenig of Loveland CO and Eli Johnson of Wheat Ridge CO.
Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold and two brothers Hugo and Lloyd Nitschke.
