Eureka, SD-Funeral service to celebrate the life of Bertha Bentz, 98, of Eureka will be 10:30 am, Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Eureka Reformed Church. Rev. James Grossmann will officiate.

Burial will be in Artas Cemetery.

There will be a prayer service at 7:00 pm Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Bertha, a long-time resident of Eureka, died Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.

Bertha was the daughter of Arthur and Sophia (Orth) Jahraus. From her birth in Greenway, SD, on January 18, 1921 to her death on Sunday she cared for people around her with love and faith. She was baptized on March 21, 1921 and confirmed on June 30, 1935 in the Reformed Church. She worked at her Uncle Fred Levi’s grocery store in Zeeland and Venturia, ND from 1938-1941. During this time, she dated her future husband, Christian “Christ” Bentz. She also worked for various neighbor families as a hired helper.

Bertha and Christ were married on September 28, 1941 in Rohrbach Reformed Church. Together they had two daughters and three sons. Bertha enjoyed preparing large meals for family gatherings and caring for God’s creation through planting flowers and gardening.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Darrell (Julie) Bentz and Danny (Cindy Scott) Bentz and daughter-in-law, Linda Bentz of Pierre, SD. Her four grandchildren, Sharon (Mike) Rosser, Holly (Matt) Heitritter, Alyssa Bentz and Christopher (Jessica) Bentz and 12 great-grandchildren, Donovan Bentz, Damien Bentz, Austin Bentz, Logan Bentz, Haylee Schoeberl, Lucas Schoeberl, Jada Heitritter, McKenzie Heitritter, Grayson Bentz, Julia Bentz, Taylor Rosser and Jasmyn Rosser will cherish the memories they have with their grandmother. Bertha is also survived by two sisters, Lorraine Beck of Eureka and Florence Huber of Owatonna, MN.

Bertha was a life member of the Reformed Church and a member of the Ladies Aide. During her earlier years, she was an organist in the Artas Reformed Church.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Christ (2-10-1994), two infant twin daughters, Arleen Fae and Darleen Mae, son, Dale DuWayne (3-13-2013), grandson, Daniel Bentz (11-7-2014), two great-grandsons, Wyatt Schoeberl and Chandler Bentz, brother, Calvin Jahraus and sister, Leona Bentz.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Wyatt Schoeberl and Chandler Bentz.

Casketbearers will be Bertha’s Grandsons and Great-Grandsons, Donovan Bentz, Damien Bentz, Austin Bentz, Logan Bentz, Lucas Schoeberl and Christopher Bentz.
