Ashley, ND-Funeral service for Bertha Eszlinger, 102, of Ashley will be 10:30 am, Monday, July 9, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Rev. Linda J. Schauer will officiate.

Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bertha died July 4, 2018 at Ashley Medical Center.

Bertha Nitschke was born November 18, 1915 on the family homestead 7 ½ miles northeast of Ashley to Gottlieb C. and Katherina (Heyd) Nitschke. She was baptized December 25, 1915 and confirmed in 1921 at Peace Lutheran Church 10 miles east of Ashley. Her baptism sponsors were Johanna Maier and Christian and Maria Nitschke. Bertha attended country school and received an eighth-grade education. She helped with general farm work on her parent’s family farm.

Bertha was united in marriage to Gottlieb Eszlinger on November 24, 1946 in Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Their witnesses were Henry and Esther Eszlinger. They started their farming operation 6 ½ miles northeast of Ashley raising small grains, cattle, dairy cows and also raising chickens, ducks and geese.

Bertha enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Bertha entered Ashley Nursing Home on December 29, 2009. November 18, 2015 marked Bertha’s 100th Birthday and friends and relatives gathered at the nursing home to help her celebrate this special occasion.

Grateful for having shared Bertha’s life are her daughter, Ramona (Harlen) Hoffman of Ashley; two granddaughters, Heidi (Darrel) Berglund of Sidney, MT and Lynn (Jamie) Wicks of Bismarck; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Samantha Berglund of Sidney, MT; one sister, Elsie Hoffman of Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law, Esther Eszlinger and Goldie Nitschke, both of Ashley and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Bertha in death were her parents, husband, Gottlieb (1989), six brothers, Arthur, August, Richard, Rudolph, Ferdinand and Roland and three sisters, Leah (Infant), Lydia (2 yrs.) and Rosina Eszlinger.

Casketbearers will be Lynn Wicks, Heidi Berglund, Wayne Hoffman, Alton Nitschke, Delbert Eszlinger and Kenneth Nitschke.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.

    Ramona, Harlan and family. we are so sorry to hear of Berth’s passing, We have so many memories of her, and will Always cherish them in our hearts, She was a wonderful gardener, and her crocheting was the best.     • I just seen online that your mother passed away. I enjoyed her in the nursing home when she I was there. I haven’t worked since 2010 at the home. Now I live north of Fargo no a small fårm of 6.7 acres about 15 mins north. My daughter and I have lived here 1 1/2 but when I moved to Fargo I lived in two other places before moving on this farm.
