Biruta died Monday, October 5, 2020 at her home.
Biruta, daughter of Hermanis and Elsa (Treumann) Riesberg was born January 23, 1930 in Riga, Latvia. This is where she was raised. In 1944 her family fled to Germany where they lived in a Displaced Persons camp. They then immigrated in 1950 to Yankton, South Dakota. Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton was responsible for assisting them with this transition and Biruta's family was forever grateful.
Biruta was united in marriage to Karlis Zvejnieks on June 2, 1951 in Yankton, SD. They made their home in Sioux Falls for one year while he finished his residency. Together, they set up his medical practice in Hosmer and later in Leola, SD. Biruta was his nurse, bookkeeper, and office manager. In 1965, they moved their family to Aberdeen and there she was able to be a full-time mother. After Karlis retired, he and Biruta spent 19 winters in Florida near Orlando. Karlis died February 21, 2015. Together they had lived seven years at Davis Court in Aberdeen and Biruta continued to live there after his death.
Biruta was a prolific knitter, knitting prayer shawls and children's sweaters. She was always a very giving person. Those who visited her will remember she kept an extra loaf of banana bread in her freezer to send with you. She enjoyed bowling and golf over the years and her friendships that came along with those recreational activities.
Biruta was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen Community Concert Association, and the former Dakota Midland Women's Auxiliary. She was instrumental in the organization of Festival of Nations.
Grateful for having shared Biruta's life are her four children, Lilita (Gerry) Hardes of San Diego, CA, Sigurds (Penny) Zvejnieks of Rapid City, SD, Inese (Jeff) Mehr of St. Cloud, MN and Tamara (Jeff) Sahli of Aberdeen, SD; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and sister, Maija Schiedel of Merrit Island, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Karlis (2-21-2015), and twin sister, Elga Norgello.
Casketbearers will be Biruta's family.
The family prefers memorials to Avera Foundation or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
