Calvin Arthur Dathe

Ellendale, ND-Memorial Service for Calvin Arthur Dathe, 86, of Ellendale will be held in the Spring of 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale.

Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Albion Township, ND.

Calvin died November 26, 2020 at Eventide Assisted Living in Jamestown, ND under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Calvin Arthur Dathe, son of Herbert and Sena (Arndt) Dathe was born August 20, 1934 on the family homestead near Ellendale, ND. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1954 and attended college at ND State Normal and Industrial School. He enlisted into the United States Air Force, serving from 1956-1957 in Korea as an aircraft electrician.

Calvin was united in marriage to Rita Caron on November 8, 1958 at Chicopee, MA. After Calvin's honorable discharge, they returned to Ellendale and started farming. They raised small grains and livestock until their retirement. They continued to make their home on the farm and in October 2020 they moved to assisted living in Jamestown.

Calvin was a faithful newspaper reader every morning. Over the years he was an active member of the community, giving of his time on Boards and committees. For more than 20 years, he was caretaker of Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Calvin enjoyed a finely groomed yard and flower beds, especially his Purple Iris and Orange Tiger Lilly's. He also liked to hunt.

Calvin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale, Herman Schlinker American Legion Post #137, VFW Post #3545, and the National Arbor Day Foundation. He was a former member of Albion Township Board and had served on the Ellendale Fire Department Board. For 43 years he was a school bus driver, a position he loved because of the children, including his own grandchildren that he got to transport and watch them in their activities.

Grateful for having shared Calvin's life are his wife, Rita; three sons, Loren (Anita) Dathe of Ossian, IN, Mark (Raulina) Dathe of Richmond, TX and Gary (Kristina) Dathe of Ellendale; daughter, Gail Dathe of Jamestown, ND; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Darlene Aman and Lucille (Gerald) Grueneich, both of Ellendale and Eva Mae (Louis) Geisert of Puyallup, WA; five brothers, Norman (Debra) Dathe of Rapid City, SD, Ralph Dathe of Lidgerwood, ND, Willard (Kathy) Dathe of Sioux Falls, SD, Donald (Rebecca) Dathe of Geneseo, ND and Kenneth (Dawn) Dathe of Fargo and several nieces and nephews.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Bonita, brother, Arvin and brother-in-law, Lawrence Aman.

Honorary Urnbearers will be Calvin's great-grandchildren, Delilah, and Oliver Dathe.

Urnbearers will be Calvin's grandchildren, Gabrielle, Matthew, Lucas, Zachary, Jonathan, Alexander, and Katelyn Dathe.
