Ashley, ND-Funeral service for Clara Caroline Kost, 96, of Ashley will be 10:00 am, Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Salem Reformed Church. The Rev. David Irwin will officiate.

Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery.

There will be a prayer service at 5:30 pm, Friday with visitation from 3:00-5:30 pm at the funeral home.

Clara died February 10, 2018 at Ashley Nursing Home.

Clara Caroline Hoffman was born November 21, 1921 in Bowdle, SD, the daughter of John W. and Mathilda (Kiesz) Hoffman. She attended school and worked on the farm.

Clara married Jacob Kost on June 24, 1943 in Greenway, SD. They moved to Ashley and farmed northeast of town for 22 years. In 1965, they moved to a farm north of Ashley where they lived until they retired in 1984. They then moved into Ashley.

Clara was well known in the community for her quilting skills. Many friends and family members continue to enjoy a hand stitched quilt created by Clara’s loving hands. She enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb, especially for the African Violet variety of houseplants. Clara and Jake ran their Chuckwagon business for many years at local auctions and events. Her barbeques and brownies were crowd favorites. Clara’s family especially enjoyed her home-made dill pickles. She loved spending time with her family, playing cards, sewing and quilting.

Clara was a member of the Salem Reformed Church and an active member of the Women’s Fellowship group and former choir member.

She is survived by her son, Dennis (Ann) Kost of Barrington, NH; daughters, Diana (Rodney) Zahn of Forbes, ND, Carol Johnson of Bismarck and Carla (Brian) Powers of Montevideo, MN; grandchildren, Wade (Sandy) Zahn of Kulm, ND and children Tanner, Tyler and Tayia; Cary (Tami) Zahn of Elko, MN and children Alyssa and Zachary; Bryan (Lisa) Zahn of Mobridge, SD and children Jordan and Megan; Kevin (Cindy) Zahn of Valley City, ND and children Jada and Jossi; Tammy (Kevin) Strobel of Kulm, ND and children Austin, Connor and Ally; Troy (Jackie) Johnson of Bismarck and children Kaden and Kale Alvstad; Kirstin (Ken) Dodge of New Market, NH and children Gavin and Zoe; Amy (Terrence) Kneisel of New Hartford, CT and children Madeline and Eliza; brother, Reuben Hoffmann of Aberdeen and sister-in-laws, Maggie Kost of Aberdeen and Ella Kost of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jacob Kost (2-22-2007), son-in-law, Gary Johnson, brother, Gordon Hoffman and sisters, Violet Breitling, Edna Dahlstrom, Emma Baumann and Gertrude Gesinger.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Tammy Strobel, Kirstin Dodge and Amy Kneisel.

Casketbearers will be Wade Zahn, Cary Zahn, Bryan Zahn, Kevin Zahn, Kevin Strobel and Troy Johnson.

The family prefers memorials to Salem Reformed Church.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
