Darlene Bernice Teske was born March 30, 1931, to Theodore and Lydia (Rieker) Teske in Hillsview, SD. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka on April 14, 1946, and attended school in Eureka, graduating in 1949.

Darlene married Harley Neuharth on December 25, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka, and then began a long career as a farmer’s wife. They lived on various rented farms in the area and in Eureka for a period of time. In 1962, they took over the operation of Harley’s home farm and lived and farmed there until 1994. They then moved to Eureka.

Darlene always wanted to be a teacher. She began teaching in various rural schools, and then, in 1967, she pursued a degree in education through correspondence courses, night school, and summer school. While working on her degree, she taught in Long Lake for two years and was a substitute teacher in Eureka. In 1972, she became a graduate of Northern State College. In 1973, Darlene was hired by the Eureka School District and taught there until her retirement in 1990. She was a Chapter teacher and also taught history, science, and math at junior high level. She instilled the importance of education in all her children; four of them followed in their mother’s footsteps and became teachers.

Darlene had many interests. She was involved in the Eureka Library, Second-Hand Rose Thrift Shop, Eureka Theatrical Company, Missoula Children’s Theater, Eureka Community Hospital Board and Eureka Development Corporation. She was also active with various choirs, 4-H, Meals on Wheels, Cancer Society, Farmerettes Extension Club, Pioneer Museum Board, Red Hatters and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of Eureka Reformed Church and active in the Ladies Aide. Darlene was an avid reader and loved playing cards and board games and hosting family gatherings. She was nominated as a candidate for the Spirit of Dakota Award, an award that recognizes outstanding South Dakota women who have been successful and admired in their community and state.

I am so very sorry to hear about your Mom. I can’t help but think about the times our families got together—visiting, eating, playing! What wonderful memories! Your Mom was instrumental in creating those gatherings and the more time that passes, I realize just how meaningful those visits were!
