Aberdeen, SD-Memorial service for Dorothy M. Barringer, 99, of Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Chapel. Rev. Jeff Whillock will officiate.

Dorothy transitioned peacefully on April 8, 2019.

Dorothy was the eldest of three children born to Fredrick and Harriet (Chinery) Link of Jersey City, New Jersey. She graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City, NJ. She worked briefly for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City, NY.

Dorothy married James C. Barringer, also from Jersey City, on June 29, 1940. They had three children, Donald, born 1943, James Jr., born 1947 and Linda, born 1956. In 1950, they moved to Laurelton (Brick Township), on the Jersey Shore. Here, Jim Sr. built a home and taught Dorothy to drive a car. After only a short time and having ready access to the relaxed “shore life”, Jersey City became a distant memory.

Dorothy was an active member of Eastern Star, Laurelton Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary (Past President), numerous card clubs and bowling league, School PTA and at one time was employed in the high school cafeteria. Life was good in rural New Jersey!

Tragedy struck in 1969, with the passing of Linda from kidney failure, Donald’s passing in 1976 from cancer and James Sr. in 1985, also from cancer. Through all the adversity, Dorothy remained strong, supporting other family members thru their grief. She demonstrated then and to her last days a staunchly independent self-reliant attitude. In 1986 she sold the family home in New Jersey and purchased a new home in Hobe Sound, FL. She made many friends, enjoying the many social activities of the 55-plus community. In July 2016, it became necessary to sell her Florida home and move into the independent living facility at Bethesda of Aberdeen. She adjusted well and enjoyed her stay. She later transitioned into Bethesda’s assisted living facility and eventually into the nursing home.

Dorothy is survived by her son, James (Gloria) Barringer of Aberdeen; three grandsons and eight great-grandchildren, Gregory Barringer of Hopkins, MN and his daughter, Liv, Michael (Ivy) Barringer of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Kiera, Claire and Glen and Donald’s son, Brian (Kristin) Barringer of Columbus, OH and their children, Trenton, Brianna, Brooklyn and Allie.

Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.
