Aberdeen, SD-There will be a private inurnment for Fern Olson, 94, of Aberdeen at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
Fern died July 15, 2019 at Aberdeen Health & Rehab.
Fern was the tenth child born to William C. and Alma Pauline (Lee) Burke on June 21, 1925, on a farm ten miles west of Isabel, SD. She attended rural school until the fifth grade and then the family moved to Morristown, SD where she continued her education, graduating with the class of 1943. A few months later, her family moved to Aberdeen where she found employment at Foster Adjustment Company.
In January of 1947, she was united in marriage to Arlo Olson. She continued to work for another three years until their first child was born. She was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in school and then she went to work for Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce for 26 years. After Fern retired from the Chamber of Commerce, she went to work for Experience Works for 11 years as a receptionist.
Fern loved to sing, dance and be with her family. There were hours of laughter when they got together. She loved her family, grandsons and sweet great-granddaughter so very much.
Survivors include two daughters, Claudia Renee (Jeff Jensen of Excelsior, MN and Terri Heiser of Aberdeen; son, Jim Olson of Eden Prairie, MN; son-in-law, Richard McCalley of Chaska, MN; four grandsons, Steven, Daniel and Jeffrey Jensen and Jason Heiser and one great-granddaughter, Colbie Heiser.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arlo, daughter, Joni McCalley (10-2017), five brothers, four sisters, and nephew, Lyle Burke.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.
