Gary died June 7, 2020 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD.
Gary H. Schatz was born November 20, 1953 to Rueben and Nora (Runge) Schatz at Regent, ND. He grew up in Regent where he graduated from Regent High School in 1972. Following graduation, he attended North Dakota State School of Science (NDSSS) for a short time and worked for local farmers. In 1978, he moved to Aberdeen and worked for Becker and Huber Electrical.
Gary was united in marriage to Raeleen Lehr on August 11, 1979 in United Church of Christ Congregational Church at Hosmer, SD. He returned to NDSSS for two years, receiving his education in Electrical. Gary and Raeleen then moved to Aberdeen where Gary earned his Journeyman license working for MAC Electric. He worked there for many years. In 2015 he suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire.
Gary loved gardening vegetables at the community garden, and in his younger years, he enjoyed fishing with his kids. He also liked looking for buried treasure with his metal detector and tinkering, and the challenge of fixing things. Gary and Raeleen traveled the United States and Europe. His love for his family was very strong and he was very proud of his sons and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Gary was a member of Plymouth Congregational UCC in Aberdeen.
Grateful for having shared Gary's life are his wife, Raeleen; sons, Christopher (Kelly Pischke) Schatz and Matthew Schatz, both of Sioux Falls; former daughter-in-law, Tanya Schatz of Sioux Falls; sisters, Elaine (Roger) Fromm of Chadron, NE, Linda Oestreich of Burnsville, MN, Carol (Kevin) Lyman of Elizabethtown, KY, Sandy (Pat) Nagel of Bismarck, ND, and Lori (Robert) Bohnhoff of New England, ND; grandchildren, Natalie and Logan Schatz, step-grandchildren, Jayden, Brooklyn and Preston Pischke and brother and sisters-in-law, LaDell (Darlene) Lehr of Cedar Rapids, IA and Mavis Lehr of Roscoe, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws and brother-in-law, Dwight Lehr.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners International.
