Aberdeen, SD-Funeral service for Gloria Dell Smith, 81, of Aberdeen will be 1:00 pm, on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory. The Rev. Gary Compton of First Baptist Church will officiate.

Private burial will be in Prairie Mound Cemetery, Butler, SD.

Visitation with Gloria’s family present will be on Friday from 11:00 am until time of service.

Gloria died peacefully on February 11, 2018, at her home surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter.

Gloria Dell Patterson, daughter of Wayne S. and Lauretta (Reich) Patterson was born on February 4, 1937 at Estelline, SD. She attended Bryant Public School. After graduation Gloria went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education from Northern State College. She taught school in Rapid City and Watertown, SD.

Gloria was united in marriage to William J. Smith on March 12, 1958 at Watertown. They moved to Chicago, IL where he attended college and she worked as a private secretary. In 1960, they moved to Webster, SD where they resided until 2003 when they moved to Aberdeen.

Gloria was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Webster where she was active in the woman’s group. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Aberdeen at the time of her death. She had been a member of the Garden Club, Study Club, P.E.O., Golf Club, and several bridge clubs. She was one of the organizers of the Christian Woman’s Club.

Grateful for having shared Gloria’s life are her children, Bobbie Sarff Johnson of Cushing, MN and Pam Kendall of Blaine, MN; Craig Kendall of Ellendale, ND, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas (Tabitha) Kendall and their children, Nova and Zoey; Alexander Kendall, all of Ellendale, ND and Cassandra (Lucas) Holien of Williston, ND and one sister, Nadine (Harvey) Sales of Houston, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. William J. Smith, and son-in-law, Kent D. Johnson.

Casketbearers will be Gloria’s grandchildren and their spouses.

Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.

    I always admired your mom for being such a kind and spunky grandma! Our children were blessed to be in her presence on many occasions. Gloria’s radiant smile was an example of God’s love that she had for everyone.
