Bismarck, ND-Memorial service for Hugo L. Carlson, 88, of Bismarck and formerly of Aberdeen will be 1:30 pm, Monday, June 10, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Chapel. Rev. Jeff Whillock will officiate.

Private inurnment will be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery.

Hugo died May 21, 2019 at his residence.

Hugo was born March 21, 1931 to O. Hugo and Julia (Whitney) Carlson at Halliday, ND. As a child, he lived in Halliday and Williston, ND, Aberdeen, SD and Valley City, ND. Hugo graduated from Valley City High School, then attended Valley City State College and the University of North Dakota. He completed his undergraduate and master’s degree at UND. Hugo participated in ROTC during college, then completed basic officers training at Fort Benning, GA. He remained in the reserve for eight years, attaining the rank of Captain.

Hugo married LaRae Robertson on January 7, 1951 in Our Savior Lutheran Church at Valley City, ND. They lived in several locations and returned to Valley City in 1958. Hugo’s first teaching job was in Flasher, ND. In 1962 he took a position in Dickinson, ND, then moved to Aberdeen, SD in 1966, where he taught at Northern State College (NSC) in the business department. Hugo retired from NSC in 1996, and during his retirement he enjoyed golf, reading and volunteer work.

Hugo was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served in various capacities. He was also a member of the Elks and Lions Clubs. In December 2016, Hugo and LaRae moved to Bismarck to live with their son, Hugh and his wife, Colleen.

Grateful for having shared Hugo’s life are his wife of 68 years, LaRae of Bismarck; sons, Craig (Terri) Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD and Hugh (Colleen) Carlson of Bismarck; six grandchildren, David, Corey (Adrianne), RaeAnne, Chas, Erik (Ally) and Alanna; one great-grandson, Colin; brother, Oscar “Oz” Carlson of Denver, CO and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe and Julian and one sister, Julia.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Alzheimer’s Association SD Chapter, 4304 Technology Dr., Sioux Falls, SD 57106.
