Aberdeen, SD-Memorial service for James “Jim” William Downie, 75, of Aberdeen will be 11:00 am, Saturday, January 11, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen.  Rev. Ruth E. Clendenin will officiate.

Burial will be in Britton City Cemetery in the spring.

James died January 7, 2020 at his home.

James William, son of James J. and Lucy (McDermott) Downie was born December 18, 1944 at St. Louis, MO.  He grew up in Britton, SD, graduating with the class of 1962.  James furthered his education at Northern State College, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education.

He was united in marriage to Kathy Olsen on June 18, 1967.  He again furthered his education by obtaining his Master’s in Music Education from University of Northern Colorado in 1972.  James taught Junior High and Senior High band and was a Festival/Contest Judge in Milbank, SD, Huron, SD and Aberdeen for approximately 30 years.  He also worked part-time at Student Loan Finance Corporation and Lee Park Golf Course.

James was a member of Masons, Yelduz Shrine and was the Director of the Shrine band.  He played trombone/keyboard bass/tuba and sang in Bob Downie Band/Kelly’s Band/Elk Chorus/Aberdeen Area Men’s Chorus/Memory Lane/First United Methodist Church Choir/Aberdeen City Band and First Presbyterian Church Choir.  James was also and avid Ham Radio operator and Lee Park golfer.

Survivors include his sons, Michael (Kathleen) of Woodbury, MN, grandchildren, Evan, Julia and Ryan and Jay (Michelle) of Chaska, MN, grandchildren, Kevin, Kyle and Stella; siblings, Robert “Bob” (Pat) Downie of Aberdeen and Patricia (Greg) Scott of Missoula, MT; three nieces, Lindsey (Raul) Rousselin, Jaime (Randy) Long and Kristen (Jake) Heiberger and three step-nephews, Todd (Karen) Husom, Tom Husom and Tim Husom.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
