Karl died September 26, 2019 at Avantara Groton.

Karl Edward Rekow, son of Fred and Susan (Chesebro) Rekow was born February 23, 1937 at Ashley, ND.  He grew up on the family homestead five miles north of Ellendale.  He attended country school and graduated from Ellendale High School with the class of 1955.  He entered the United States Air Force in May 1955 and was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada and later at Saratoga Springs, NY as a radar operator.  He was honorably discharged December 1958.

Karl married Rachel Haas on December 21, 1958 in Saratoga Dutch Reformed Church in Schuylerville, NY.  They returned to Ellendale where he attended University of North Dakota at Ellendale and worked for Ed Kendall Construction as a carpenter for a number of years.  He then partnered with Adolph Zimbleman doing construction and worked for a short time at UBC in Ellendale.  Karl then had his dream job when he was able to work with his son, Jerry, working for JR Repair and Construction from the late 1980’s thru mid-1990’s.  Over the years he was also a part-time farmer with his brother, Henry.

Karl enjoyed traveling, especially road trips and visiting family.  Spending time with grandchildren and doing activities with them such as going to movies, roller skating and snow skiing at Huff Hills and reunions with Jaycee friends was something he always looked forward too.  Karl’s service work with the Masons and Shrine and volunteering on the restoration of Ellendale Opera House was very important to him.  He loved history regarding family and buildings.  Those who knew him, knew he was proud of driving his VW diesel cars and putting hundreds of thousands of miles on them.

Karl has been a Mason since 1978, a member of Masonic Lodge 13 and Scottish Rite.  Also, a member of Yelduz Shrine, ND Jaycees and U.S. Jaycees, 30-year member of Ellendale Fire Department, Ellendale Flying Club and Facilitator for Beginning Experiences since 1980.

Grateful for having shared Karl’s life are three sons, Gerald (Brenda) Rekow of Ellendale; Keith (Connie) Rekow of Langford, SD and Paul (Stephanie Johnson) Rekow of Spencer, IA; daughter, Linda (Rod) Saurer of Fergus Falls, MN; special friend, Susan Odland of Groton; nine grandchildren, Brandon Rekow, Bridget Bennett, Jessica Cole, Derek Rekow, Ryan Rekow, Leah Rekow, Sarah Rekow, Dillon Strommen and Katie Strommen and 12 great-grandchildren.
