Aberdeen, SD-Graveside service for Leonard Victor Wanttie, 90, of Aberdeen will be 1:00 pm, Monday, September 21, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Rev. Thomas Carlson will officiate. The service will be live streamed and available at www.Carlsenfh.com under Leonard’s obituary.
Leonard died September 17, 2020 at his daughter's home, surrounded by his loving family.
Leonard Victor Wanttie, son of Victor and Lempi (Havisto) Wanttie was born August 3, 1930 in Hecla, SD. He grew up in the Hecla-Aberdeen area and attended school in Hecla. When he was 16 years old (fibbing about his age) he went to work for Hyman Freightways on the loading dock and later became a truck driver.
Leonard was united in marriage to Wilma Mae Gross on January 24, 1953 at First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen and raised their seven children. Leonard retired after 41 years with Hyman Freightways. He earned the One & Two Million Mile Awards, and also achieved the Hyman Safety Award with a perfect Driving Record. He was a US Army Veteran from 1948-1952 as a 32nd Engineer and fought during the Korean War.
Leonard enjoyed hunting, trapping, and fishing. He made time for all outdoor activities throughout his entire life. One of his favorite things to do was to collect and sell scrap metal. Leonard attended as many of his family's functions as he could and was a very proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Grateful for having shared Leonard's life are his children, Gordon Wanttie, Linda (Bob) Wilson, LeaAnn (Kary) Haar and Doug (Sharlene) Wanttie, all of Aberdeen, Julie (Rob) Drapeaux of Wahpeton, ND and Brian (Laina) Wanttie of Mineola, TX; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Wanttie of Aberdeen and sisters, Evelyn Raymond of Aberdeen and Mavis Williams of Springfield, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Wilma, daughter, Lynn Hanson brother, Ralph Wanttie and sisters, Darlene Wylie, and Hilda Haggerty, and grandson Brandon.
