Lothar was born to Ervin and Frieda (Bruntsch) Kost on March 19, 1933 on the family homestead near Ree Heights, SD. He graduated from Ree Heights High School in 1952. He worked on the family farm and later attended Huron College in 1971. Lothar then worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation for 24 years, from 1971 to 1995, as a Highway Appraiser.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Jones in 1978. They lived on the farm until 2012 and then moved to Aberdeen, SD. Lothar was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.

Lothar enjoyed the family farm and maintaining his vintage Allis-Chalmers tractor that the family purchased new. He also enjoyed the cowboy lifestyle, giving up his cowboy boots only after he entered the nursing home. Lothar was known for enjoying Western books and movies, and for being kind-hearted to all.

Grateful for having shared Lothar’s life are his wife of 41 years, Shirley; daughters, Karen (Perry) Fischer of St. Lawrence, SD, Lynn Zoellner of Orange Beach, AL, Cindy Kost of Huron, SD, and Marie Teeter of Minneapolis, MN; and two grandchildren, Katie Spicer and Hayden Zoellner.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Bill.
