Mabel Middlestead was born February 9, 1936 to Adolph and Elizabeth (Schrum) Middlestead west of Monango in Dickey County, ND.  She attended school in Monango, graduating from the eighth grade in 1952.  She then went to work as a babysitter for her schoolteacher.  As a child, she was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Ellendale and was confirmed in 1953.  In 1955, Mabel began working at the State Hospital in Jamestown.

Mabel married Arthur Fregien on August 8, 1957 at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Ellendale.  They farmed on the Fregien family homestead and raised their three children.  She became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley.  Mabel was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  While on the farm she loved milking the cows, gardening, canning vegetables and meat and adored her little chihuahua, Snoopy.  She always liked to go fishing with her family and enjoyed cooking for them.  She was well known for her stuffing and gravy.

In 1987, Mabel began working at the Ashley Nursing Home and continued for the next 2 1/2 years and also at the cannery in Danzig, ND.  She then moved to Jamestown in 1991 and worked at Ave Maria Nursing Home for 1 ½ years and O’Brian’s Care Center for six years until she retired in 1998.

Mabel crocheted beautiful afghans, baby blankets and pillows.  Those that received her gifts always admired her craftsmanship.  She also liked to do puzzles in her free time.
