Michael “Mike” Sylvester Fischer, son of Sylvester and Martha (Mayer) Fischer, was born on the family farm at rural Ipswich, SD on February 6, 1929. While growing up on the farm, Mike attended school in Ipswich. He continued to help on the farm until he was drafted into the United States Army on September 29, 1951. He served in Korea, learning the trade of Mechanics. Following an honorable discharge on June 4, 1953, he moved to Minneapolis for a short time before returning to Aberdeen and going to work at a junkyard.

Mike was united in marriage to Julia Louise Heinz on November 3, 1954 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. He became an auto mechanic and was employed for several years at Voight Buick. Mike also worked as a mechanic at Midland Motors, Johnson Motors and Leon’s Auto Lab. Mike was very good at tuning and repairing carburetors. He always had a nice new car that he kept in the garage and drove around town in old cars that barely ran.

Mike and Julia always had a garden and Mike spent a lot of time keeping the varmints out. He really enjoyed decorating for the holidays. His perfect manicured yard was his pride and joy.

Grateful for having shared Mike’s life are his five children, Ray (Ingrid) Fischer of Ipswich, Jim Fischer of Aberdeen, Ron (Gail) Fischer of Aberdeen, Craig (Melanie) Fischer of Aberdeen and Peggy Miller of Aberdeen; sister Adeline Bruckner of Aberdeen; brother Albert (Katherine) Fischer of Aberdeen; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
