Aberdeen, SD-Memorial service for Roberto LeRoy Holmes, 52, of Aberdeen will be 4:00 pm, Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Moose Lodge, Aberdeen with a luncheon to follow. Pastor Devin Hebeison and Jerry Banley will officiate.

Roberto died March 9, 2019 at his residence.

Roberto LeRoy was born April 24, 1966 in San Bernardino, CA. He was placed up for adoption when he was two years old and was adopted at the age of four years old to Jasper and Maria (Ryan) Holmes. He then moved to Aberdeen and attended Aberdeen Public Schools, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1984. He then attended Northern State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Language Arts.

Roberto entered the United States Army Reserve in his early 20’s and served 20 years. During that time, he served in Germany, Persian Gulf and Ft. Lewis, WA. Roberto was married to Vileen Olson Loomis on April 26, 1996 in Aberdeen. Over the years, Roberto worked at several restaurants in Aberdeen.

He married Kim VanDover on May 5, 2007 in Aberdeen. Roberto enjoyed martial arts, working on old cars, karaoke and going to movies. He liked to play the guitar and sing. He also had a strong interest in firearms and knives.

Survivors include his daughter, Jasmine Holmes of Aberdeen; his mother, Maria Holmes of Houston, TX; two brothers, Carlos Ortiz of Houston, TX and Gilbeto Ortiz of Edinberg, TX; foster brother, Jessie Little of Aberdeen; step-son, Shawn Loomis of Aberdeen, step-daughter, Elizabeth VanDover of Aberdeen and two step-grandchildren, Willow Shepard and Gabriella Shepard.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Raymondo Ortiz.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
