Ruth died March 13, 2019 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.

Ruth was born to William and Magdalena (Joachim) Merkel on March 6, 1917, 10 miles northeast of Eureka on the family homestead. She lived a very tough life on the farm. At the age of six, she and her siblings had to get up at 6:00 am and help with the chores. She always wanted to become a nurse, but her father did not allow her to attend high school. Hence, her dream died on the vine. Her family was very spiritually oriented. Every morning after breakfast, they would hold morning devotions. The world had their Mother Teresa, their family had “Mother Ruth”.

Ruth married Gideon Dais in May of 1938. They farmed on a farm six miles north and one and a half mile east of Eureka. Gideon was a workaholic in his younger years. They had three sons, Clarence born 2-6-1939, Gary born 4-18-1941 and Stanley born 5-20-1950. When the boys were young, they had a lung disease which in German was called “Kruppe”. Many times, they almost lost them to illness. Prayers and doctors saved them. Ruth always worked the fields with Gideon. During summer months, a young girl was hired to babysit the boys while Ruth was out helping Gideon. All three of their sons earned a college degree. Clarence and Gary became high school teachers and administrators and Stanley worked for the City of Kansas City.

Ruth and Gideon moved off the farm in 1987 and bought a house in Eureka. Ruth enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables and meats, quilting, sewing and reading. She always looked forward to entertaining friends. After Gideon entered nursing care, Clarence took care of Ruth. Ruth spent some time at Hosmer Nursing Home after falling and breaking her hip. She returned home in 2012. She had macular degeneration, hence several more falls. She entered Avera Eureka Health Care Center, one of the finest in South Dakota and spent the rest of her life on earth there.

Ruth is survived by three sons; Clarence of Eureka and Gary (Kathy) and Stanley (Karen), both of Kansas City, MO; seven granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, William (Estella) Merkel of Eureka and Tom (Vivian) Merkel of Washburn, ND; two sisters, Betty Ehmke and Tillie Merkel both of Eureka and three sisters-in-law, Agnes Merkel of Ashley, Loretta Merkel of Bowdle and Lois Merkel of Leola.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Andrew, Leo, Milton and Rudolph and sister, Frieda (James) Spagnola.
