Violet Goehring was born March 24, 1927 on the family farmstead near Ashley in McPherson County, SD to John J. and Emma (Schauer) Fischer. She grew up ten miles southwest of Ashley. She attended elementary school. Violet worked on the farm until her marriage.

Violet was united in marriage to Ernest G. Goehring on November 2, 1947 in Jewell Baptist Church, rural Ashley. They made their home on his family’s homestead where they raised small grains and livestock. Later, Violet worked at Ashley Bakery and then in the bakery department at Ashley SuperValu. She and Ernest moved to Ashley in the fall of 1994. After her husband’s death she remained in Ashley and entered nursing care in September of 2017.

Violet was a member of Ashley Baptist Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed quilting, cross-stitch and canning. She was always ready to show anyone one of her quilts and donated many of her beautiful projects to fundraising and charity. She also enjoyed having people over for a meal. She would always say “If you go away hungry, it’s your own fault”. Violet was a very generous person and will be remembered by many for her generosity and giving spirit. Like one of her nieces said, “Heaven has gained a gem”.

Grateful for having shared Violet’s life are her son, Thomas (Denise) Goehring of Fort Collins, CO; daughter-in-law, Patricia Goehring of Rolette, ND; two grandchildren, Jonathan Goehring and Theresa (Mark) Mindt; one great-grandson, Noah (Katie) Sabo and one great-great-grandson, Terrance Sabo.
