Westport, SD-Funeral Service for Walter A. Achterberg, 92, of Westport will be 10:30 am, Friday, August 21, 2020 at Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory. Don Miller will officiate. There will be a prayer service at 6:00 pm, Thursday with Rev. Justin Brotzel officiating. Visitation from 4:00-6:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with military graveside rites.Walter died August 16, 2020 at his daughter and son-in-law's home in Westport. Walter was born September 17, 1927 to Bruno and Emma (Schurnbeck) Achterberg in Codington County, SD. In 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army and trained as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic. He received a WWII Victory Medal. In 1949, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Goose Bay, Labrador, Newfoundland at Staff sergeant. He assisted in performing inspections and maintenance of aircraft and in the inspections and maintenance of engines and in changing engines, while serving with the 1227th Air Base Group. Walter was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Fischer in 1953. With this union, two daughters were born, Marilyn and Evonne "Vonnie". Walter continued his love to be around airplanes by working with North Central Airlines in 1959, located in Aberdeen, SD. He retired from Republic Airlines in 1986 and then continued to work at other stations as Manager for a couple of years. Walter was united in marriage to Evonne Lux in 1963. With this union, one daughter was born, Lisa. Walter loved his God, "Jehovah" and was very devoted to serving him. Walter was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Watertown, SD. A special thanks to Lisa Hinze and Kelly Gederos and Avera Home Health for their assistance in helping with his care the last two years. Grateful for having shared Walter's life are his daughters, Evonne "Vonnie" (Scott) Gilbertson of Westport and Lisa Achterberg of Excelsior, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Marilyn Kramer, and sister, Burnice Fox. Casketbearers will be Scott Gilbertson, Jim Scepaniak, Don Schlosser, Jim Miller and Don Miller Jr. Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.
