Wilbert died Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Ashley Nursing Home.

Wilbert was born May 16, 1930 to Jacob and Elisabeth (Opp) Ulrich in Eureka, SD. Wilbert’s mother passed away when he was an infant. Wilbert grew up on his father’s farm not far from where his grandfather homesteaded; on top of the big hill south of Fredonia, ND. He grew up attending country school in Antelope township. He attained an eighth-grade education but assured that his children received a college education. He grew up as a young boy shearing sheep and working on threshing crews. He especially loved working with horses which he had up until the late sixties. He struck out on his own at the age of seventeen and stayed at his sister Claudia Retzer and her husband Reinie’s farm on the state line.

He married Alvina Hoffman in 1951 who lived on a farm one mile away. They rented a farm on the South Dakota side for six years until they moved onto the Hoffman homestead in 1960. They purchased the farm and added more land over the years to expand the farming operation. To this union, three children were born; Gary, Terry and Nancy. Gary and Terry are the fourth generation to farm the land. For six decades, they raised cattle, sheep, fowl, milked cows, along with wheat, sunflowers, soybeans and other grains.

Wilbert was proud of his German Russian heritage. He had a survivor aptitude and a driving will to succeed. Wilbert’s passion was farming and everything about farming. He mowed and cut hay up until the age of 87. He loved spending time with his family and playing cards especially Rook. He loved listening to Molly B polka every Saturday night. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and even had served several terms on the church council. He also was a member of North Dakota Farmers Union.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Alvina, three children Gary Ulrich (Cordell Mellegard), Terry (Polly) Ulrich; both of Ashley and Nancy (Brad) Crotty; Grand Forks; two granddaughters Tara Ulrich; Williston, ND and Andrea Ulrich; Devils Lake, ND and two sisters Claudia Retzer; Ashley and Hulda Harsch; Ray, ND and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also is survived by an aunt and uncle Hulda and Edmund Opp.

He is preceded in death by his father Jacob, his mother Elisabeth, his stepmother Ann Ulrich, his siblings Pauline Pease, Leonard Ulrich, Helen Stafford, Lea Ulrich, Rosemary Miller, Pearl Ulrich, and Cyrus Ulrich as well as numerous relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Ashley Medical Center or Zion Lutheran Church.
