Phyllis Pearl Pfeifle was born January 22, 1936 to Esther Pfeifle. Phyllis was raised by her parents, Esther (Pfeifle) and Asoph “Red” Sayler and grew up in the Ashley area. She attended Ashley Public School, graduating with the class of 1950.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Norman L. Merkel on December 5, 1954 in Ashley. They made their home southeast of Ashley on his farm where they were general farmers. In February 1969, the family move into Ashley; Norman died of cancer July 10, 1969.

She was then united in marriage to Chris Earthmond Golz on June 24, 1977 in Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. They lived in Jamestown, where they owned and operated Buffalo Paint & Glass. Earthmond died suddenly in 1981 of a Brain Stem Stroke. Phyllis sold the business and began working at Alpha Opportunities, Inc. at one of their group homes for many years as an aide. In the late 1990’s, she retired. She moved to Bismarck in 2009 to be near her sons.

Phyllis was a huge animal lover and donated her time visiting animals at Central Dakota Humane Society and thoroughly enjoyed their newsletter. She loved Minnesota Twins Baseball and Minnesota Vikings Football and seldom missed a game on television. Over the years, she was an avid collector of Piggy Banks. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Timmy (Stacie) Merkel of Bismarck and Michael (Rhonda Maas) Merkel of Mandan; three grandchildren, Levon Merkel, Shaina (Travis) Schell and Rachel Merkel and four siblings, Cynthia Fetch of Bismarck, Wayne (Debbie) Sayler of The Colony, TX, Rita (Dale) Loseth of Sumner, WA and Russell (Kathleen) Sayler of Bismarck.

Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, both husbands, Norman and Earthmond and daughter-in-law, Gina K. Merkel.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Central Dakota Humane Society.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
