Ellendale, ND-Richard “Dick” D. Schroeder, 83, of Ellendale and formerly of Northwood died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale.

Richard “Dick” Dale Schroeder, son of Fred and Lena (Nienes) Schroeder was born June 1, 1937 in Northwood, ND. He grew up in the Thompson/Northwood area where he attended public school. He worked with his parents on the family homestead farm. After his parents died, he moved into Thompson where he worked as a farm laborer for area farmers.

Dick was united in marriage to Evelyn Avron on November 24, 1984 in United Methodist Church at Grand Forks, ND. They made their home in Thompson and he worked at a recycling plant in Grand Forks. While working in Grand Forks, he helped clean up the area after the 1997 Red River flood. He retired in 2000.

During retirement, he and Evelyn volunteered as Foster Grandparents at the Grand Forks YMCA for 12 years. They both thoroughly enjoyed their time with the children. In 2013 they moved to Steele to be closer to his granddaughter.

Dick loved gardening. He had a huge vegetable garden with a large flower bed. He was known for having a finely detailed car…. always. Dick had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and was a member of Holmes United Methodist Church in Reynolds, ND.

Grateful for having shared Dick’s life are his step-son, Rickie (Lori) Holweger of Steele, ND; brother, LeRoy (Mae) Schroeder of Grand Forks, ND; three grandchildren, Sarah (Nick) Friez and Cole Holweger, both of Steele and Jenna (Josh) Nelson of Moorhead, MN and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Jacob Friez.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Evelyn (5-14-2020), four brothers, Floyd, Roland, Kenneth, and Clarence and two sisters, Doris Lang and LaVerne Lenz.
