Velma died September 17, 2018 at Ashley Nursing Home.

Velma M. Helfenstein, daughter of August and Emma (Schneider) Helfenstein was born November 7, 1927 on the family farm near Long Lake in McPherson County, SD. She attended country school at Petersburg #2 until eighth grade and helped on the family farm. Velma also played the piano until she got married.

Velma was united in marriage to Herbert Iszler. They made their home on his family’s farm near Venturia, ND where they farmed until Herbert died suddenly in 1980. Velma moved into Ashley soon after and worked for The Ashley Tribune as a column contributor for a short time. She traveled to Oregon, St. Louis, MO, Nashville, TN and Israel twice. While there she rode a camel, an experience she never forgot.

A fun fact about Velma is that her name was supposed to be Wilma but whoever recorded it on her birth certificate wrote Velma because of her mother’s thick German accent. Velma was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she was active with the Ladies Aide. She loved church and church hymns. She knew many hymns and several verses of those hymns by heart. She enjoyed reading, puzzle books, crossword puzzles and word searches but over the years she also made time to volunteer at the nursing home helping out with bingo. Her favorite television shows were westerns and mysteries. Velma will always be remembered for her devotion to her family and extended family. She was a very proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Grateful for having shared Velma’s life are her daughter-in-law, Lois Iszler of Montevideo, MN; two grandchildren, Stacy (Travis) Trentham of Aberdeen and Eric Iszler of Montevideo, MN and two great-grandchildren, Braedon Trentham and Rebekah Trentham.

Preceding Velma in death were her parents, husband, Herbert (9-5-1980), son, Terry (6-26-2016), sister, Lillian Iszler (9-6-2014) and three infant siblings.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Braedon Trentham and Rebekah Trentham.

Casketbearers will be Bob Krieger, Keith Iszler, Bryan Iszler, Eric Iszler, Travis Trentham and Kayla Metzger.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
